SWCP Interloper – 20 Sept 2018

Newquay – Perranporth

Okay, so, have I mentioned it been windy? It’s hard to get across how strong the wind has been in photos. After all, that grass could just grow bent over like that, right?

Hmmm…

Today I woke to persistent rain and a yellow alert for wind from the MET (i.e. weather specialists in the UK).

Having braved the cliff tops on previous days, when all that kept me from flying away sometimes was the weird zimmer-frame-like stance I’d take with my walking poles (that and getting your centre of gravity as low as possible), I wasn’t inclined to risk going up there on a day when there was an actual wind warning out there.

Instead, I hatched a marvellous plan to bus it to Newquay and walk the stretch to Perranporth I had planned to do on Friday. Then, on Friday, I could catch the return bus to Port Isaac when the weather was predicted to be better.

Brilliant plan, right?

Wrong.

First, I got to Newquay and ended up spending two hours looking for a replacement charge cord for my Surge. Finally, I gave up and bought a whole new fitbit to monitor my steps etc over the rest of the swcp. With that done, I tried to get down to the Penpol tidal footbridge before it got inundated (and needing to add 7.4 km to the day’s walk to go upstream to the roadbridge). Ga’gong. No go zone.

Now, I hate to moan, but the day was clearly not going to plan, no matter how marvellous. Huff.

One more bus ride with The Beast taking centre stage in many a Cornish conversation, and I was trundling uphill through the whirling drizzle to the Perranporth YHA. Sigh. Good thing there were a bunch of awesome folks to chat with over the course of the gloomy evening. Here’s the view from the hostel.

Stats: 10685 steps; 68 floors; 7.5 km
